Background of the Study

Cancer significantly impacts patients' physical, emotional, and social well-being. Oncology nurses are integral to the multidisciplinary team that supports cancer patients, providing not only medical care but also psychosocial support, patient education, and symptom management. Their role is crucial in enhancing patients' quality of life (QoL) throughout the cancer journey.

Kaduna State, like many regions in Nigeria, faces challenges in providing comprehensive cancer care due to limited resources and healthcare infrastructure. Despite these challenges, oncology nurses strive to deliver holistic care aimed at improving patient outcomes. However, there is a paucity of research evaluating the specific contributions of oncology nurses to the QoL of cancer patients in this region.

Statement of the Problem

While the importance of oncology nurses in patient care is well-recognized, their specific impact on the QoL of cancer patients in Kaduna State remains underexplored. Understanding this impact is essential for developing strategies to support and enhance the role of nurses in cancer care, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating how oncology nurses contribute to improving the QoL of cancer patients in Kaduna State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the specific roles and responsibilities of oncology nurses in Kaduna State concerning patient care.

2. To evaluate the impact of nursing interventions on the QoL of cancer patients.

3. To identify challenges faced by oncology nurses that may affect their ability to improve patient QoL.

Research Questions

1. What are the specific roles and responsibilities of oncology nurses in Kaduna State in relation to patient care?

2. How do nursing interventions affect the QoL of cancer patients in this region?

3. What challenges do oncology nurses face that may hinder their effectiveness in improving patient QoL?

Research Hypotheses

1. Oncology nurses in Kaduna State play a significant role in enhancing the QoL of cancer patients.

2. Specific nursing interventions are positively correlated with improved patient QoL.

3. Challenges such as limited resources and training opportunities negatively impact the effectiveness of oncology nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on oncology nurses and cancer patients in selected healthcare facilities in Kaduna State. Data will be collected through interviews, questionnaires, and QoL assessments to evaluate the impact of nursing care. Limitations may include potential biases in self-reported data and the cross-sectional nature of the study, which may not capture changes over time.

Definitions of Terms

• Quality of Life (QoL): A multidimensional concept that includes physical, emotional, and social aspects of a patient's well-being.

• Oncology Nurse: A nurse specialized in caring for patients with cancer, involved in administering treatments, managing symptoms, and providing support and education
